Youth Contract

The Youth Contract – helping young people to achieve and succeed

If you are 16 and 17 and are not in education, employment or training, and have low qualifications, such as one or no GCSEs at grade C, you may be referred to participate in the Youth Contract. If you are a care leaver or are leaving youth custody you may also be eligible.

On the Youth Contract, a mentor will be working with you over a six month period to give you the skills and confidence to get back into education, training or employment. They will:

  • meet you to discuss your options and agree an action plan
  • help you to go back to school, start a college or training course, such as an apprenticeship, or to find a job
  • help you to succeed and achieve by sustaining your education, employment or training for five out of six months.

Who can apply?

The Youth Contract programme is open to the following groups of people:

1. School leavers

You can apply if you’re a school leaver:

  • aged 16 to 17 and
  • have one or fewer GCSEs at A*-C and
  • are not in education, employment or training.

If you completed school this summer and did not sit any exams we are also interested in hearing from you.

2. Young offenders

You can apply if you’re a young offender released from custody:

  • aged 16 to 17 and
  • have zero or more GCSEs and
  • are not in education, employment or training.

3. Young people in care/care leavers

You can apply if you are or were in care and are:

  • aged 16 to 17 and
  • have zero or more GCSEs and
  • are not in education, employment or training.
